The development of the Academic Building for the Schools of Nursing & Education at Notre Dame of Maryland University brought a modern academic facility into harmony with its historic Baltimore campus. Encompassing approximately 32,000 square feet, the new structure houses the Center for Caring with Technology, featuring three lifelike simulation labs that replicate obstetrics, pediatrics, and other clinical scenarios—enabling students to practice nursing and healthcare skills in a realistic, immersive environment.

D.W. Kozera, Inc. performed a geotechnical investigation to support the design and construction of the new building. The site presented challenges, including man-placed fill soils, sloping topography, and the presence of existing utilities.

During construction, the DWK team provided field testing and observation to track conditions and support the design recommendations. This work included oversight of footing excavations, fill placement, and compaction operations. Through close collaboration with the owner, design team, and contractor, we contributed to the successful delivery of a complex building project that supports the university’s expanding nursing program and future campus growth.
