The Herman & Walter Samuelson Children’s Hospital at Sinai expanded pediatric care within LifeBridge Health’s Sinai Hospital campus, creating a welcoming, family-centered environment designed by Hord Coplan Macht. The 57,200-square-foot facility added a two-story inpatient wing with 26 private rooms, treatment areas, and family spaces that allow parents to remain close to their children. The project was guided by principles of healing and sustainability, achieving LEED Silver certification through features such as green roofs, energy and water efficiency, and the use of low-emission and locally sourced materials. The new hospital strengthened Sinai’s mission to provide comprehensive pediatric care in a setting designed for comfort and connection.

D.W. Kozera, Inc. served as the geotechnical engineer for the project, providing design recommendations for the drilled shaft foundation system and supporting construction with testing and observation services. The firm’s work included subsurface exploration, drilled shaft design, and crosshole sonic logging to assess shaft integrity. DWK also conducted field testing of soils and concrete during construction, working closely with the contractor and structural engineer to support design implementation. Because construction occurred within an active healthcare campus, field operations required careful coordination and sequencing to maintain safety and minimize disruption.

DWK’s design expertise and consistent field involvement contributed to a smooth and coordinated construction process. By maintaining clear communication among the design, structural, and construction teams, DWK provided practical, informed guidance that helped the project progress efficiently. The completed hospital reflects the team’s collaborative approach and commitment to delivering a sustainable, family-oriented space that supports quality care for children and their families.
