Johns Hopkins University’s School of Nursing expanded its East Baltimore campus through the renovation and addition to the existing Pinkard Building, creating a transformative academic and research hub that supports the next generation of healthcare leaders. The project introduced modern classrooms, simulation and research labs, and flexible student gathering areas while improving the building’s connection to the surrounding medical campus. Designed to modernize the existing five-story structure and add approximately 41,000 square feet of new space, the facility reflects Johns Hopkins’ commitment to innovation, community engagement, and sustainability. The architectural vision emphasized openness and light, bringing new energy to the Wolfe Street corridor and the heart of the university’s health district.

D.W. Kozera, Inc. (DWK) provided geotechnical investigation, construction testing and observation, and pile integrity testing for the new addition. Working closely with the design and construction teams, DWK evaluated subsurface conditions to support foundation design and construction planning. During the foundation phase, DWK’s engineers performed testing and observation to confirm pile performance and maintain quality through every stage of installation. These services supported smooth coordination between disciplines and kept the project moving efficiently within the active medical campus.

DWK’s involvement reflected the firm’s steady, collaborative approach to complex institutional work. By combining technical expertise with responsive field communication, DWK helped the team make practical, timely decisions that supported project progress and design intent. The completed facility strengthens the School of Nursing’s mission and enhances the surrounding community—a result shaped by thoughtful collaboration and shared commitment to quality.
